Free Cancer Screening Monday, May 21st
We are having a free cancer screening Monday, May 21st, at the Senior Center of Rainier. This is a simple process to check for the cancer gene. They use a cotton swab on the inside of a person's cheek to test their DNA.
We will be open early for BINGO Monday, so come join us for the fun and free testing.
Now that the inside of our building has been painted, we'll be able to have special speakers and presentations again!

Senior Center of Rainier T-Shirt with Green & Yellow Logo
I changed the logo on the dark Senior Center T-shirts. The white was just too stark and I didn't like the way it looked. (I still have the digital file.) You can find our newest design at: Senior Center of Rainier Dark T-Shirts

Senior Center of Rainier Gear
You can now get "Senior Center of Rainier Gear" in our new online store using the link below. We have several items to choose from. These items are printed on demand, so it may take awhile for your order to arrive. There are coffee mugs, T-shirts, sweatshirts, hoodies, cell phone cases for Samsung and iPhones, stikers and more.
Ladies: Please remember that women's tee's fit a little snugger than the tee's for men. They have tapered waists. We have several items to choose from. These items are printed on demand, so it may take awhile for your order to arrive.
I ordered a shirt for George from our store a couple of weeks ago. It still hasn't arrived. I ordered other shirts from Amazon and they arrived in less than a week. Either way, the Senior Center gets paid. Amazon Merch doesn't have the variety of products offered that our store has presently. That being said, the T-shirts are less expensive and the quality is very good on Amazon. If you have Amazon Prime, the shipping and handling is free.
You can find our sweatshirts with logos on the front, or on the back from our Senior Center online store.

Update on STEDI Meeting & Pre-Valentine's Day Bazaar
What an amazing couple of days! Donna and Cindy, who work in our kitchen, came in to help cook and serve breakfast for the people who showed up at the Senior Center for the STEDI Meeting Friday. We started cooking at 6 AM and put breakfast out at 7:45 AM. We had over 20 people attend and most of them ate breakfast.
Donna, Cindy and I all baked goodies for the bake sale coming up the next day at the Pre-Valentine's day Bazaar.
Debbie came in and helped at the Bazaar all day Saturday and she brought a bag of goodies that she baked, too.
Art, Sue Watson, George and I were at the Senior Center both days. Shirley & Sue both came Friday evening, to help set up for the Bazaar.
Sarah Christensen & Amber Chavis put on the most amazing bazaar! If you didn't attend, you missed a fun event! This was not only fun, but this was also the best, most enjoyable bazaar we've ever had at the Senior Center during our time here. They set up and put everything back. They had to take the furniture out of the back room to make space for vendors.
Debbie and I served at least 40 meals Saturday to the vendors and their children. We had breakfast croissants, polish sausages, turkey sandwiches, tuna Sandwiches, vegetable soup, split pea soup, chips, potato salad, and cole slaw. We offered free coffee and snacks. Sandwiches were made to order on their choice of bread. (French bread, which we sliced, croissants or the rolls we use for the polish sausages.) People had a wide variety of items to choose from for lunch. Lunch was $5.00. We provided this service for the vendors and their families, yet many, many customers ate lunch, too.
Our vendors had a wonderful time! There was a constant stream of customers that came through the Senior Center from the time we opened until we closed. Sue Watson and Shirley Roger had booths by the front door. Shirley sold 4 cookbooks. Sue talked to several people who are interested in joining our Senior Center. She also sold several lunch tickets.
All in all, this was a wonderful experience. Amber and Sarah are planning several upcoming events to benefit the Senior Center, including a motorcycle/auto show July 20th in Wilkowski Park.
Thank you, Sarah & Amber for all your hard work organizing the Pre-Valentine's Day Bazaar! We appreciate your dedication and commitment to our Senior Center!

The Vikings Were Here!
A Special Thank You from the Senior Center of Rainier to Bill Koutrouba and the Vikings Festival Crew!
When Captain Bill Koutrouba mentioned holding a Viking Festival in Rainier, my husband George and I thought it was a wonderful idea. George is an original "idea fairy". He knows ideas can be great, but they take a tremendous amount of work to bring them to fruition. After months of planning and just plain hard work, Bill and his crew, along with Tony Cox (Bear) brought the Viking Festival to life!
George and I enjoyed going to the Viking Festival. Bill showed us around and introduced us to vendors and reenactors in Wilkowski Park. It was amazing! People from all walks of life meandered through the crowd watching everything from a beaver being skinned to swords being forged. They had mock fights and cannons that shot water balloons. There were tents, horses, people dressed up in Viking gear - all surrounded with artifacts from the Viking era. The booths were filled with amazing items that were handmade. One of our favorite leather booths was the "Hawk & Dove" which had custom leather crafts. They made quality purses, wallets, belts, and Viking gear. Several of the vendors said this was the best event they'd worked all year! They enjoyed being in Rainier because the people here are friendly and they look forward to coming back next year.
During the planning of the festival, Bill told us that the Vikings crew would buy food for the Senior Center of Rainier's pantry with the proceeds they earned from this year's festival. After the festival, he called George and asked him for a shopping list. Wednesday Bill and members of the Viking Festival Crew, Scott & Samantha Kammerson, Tony Cox (Bear) and Eileen Largen, came to the Senior Center with a truck and van filled with the food to donate to our pantry.
We've never seen anything like it! Six tri-tip roasts, cases of canned vegetables, 2 large bags of rice, beef & chicken broth, toilet paper, paper towels, facial tissues, gallons of syrup, mayonnaise, pasta, as well as #10 tins of tomato sauce and diced tomatoes. They brought in cases & cases of food. The pantry had boxes stacked from one end to the other with food! Bill and his crew didn't just buy the items on our list, they bought those items in large quantities! They also brought in fresh vegetables from our own Rainier Community Garden!
We look forward to next year's Viking Festival in Rainier. We hope to see you there!
