Prescription Take Back Week in Rainier
This week RCC is sponsoring a prescription take back week here in Rainier, as a
part of a larger state prescription take back campaign. How does this involve
you? If any of you have a Facebook page, if you could please post the attached
message on FB, and ask your Rainier/Yelm friends to also share it, that would be
awesome. You can also share it off our Facebook page if that would be easier.
Please let us know if you have any questions.

Today on Earth Day and my
birthday Dawn, Terry, Autumn, Jesse Nubbe and myself planted flowers at the
Rainier Veteran's Memorial and the flower bed by the Welcome to Rainier Sign
North end of Rainier. Terry took some pics and will post them to the RLC
blog.
It took a whole hour with 5 of us and we were done before the rain came
and then all went to Valley Heart for breakfast with Runyon's.

Lake Lawrence Bird Study in Progress:
Lake Lawrence Bird Study in progress - New members invited:
– Lake Lawrence Bird Study in Progress, NEW MEMBERS ENCOURAGED TO JOIN
An exciting citizen science bird study is currently being conducted near waterfowl concentration areas by Lake Lawrence in SE Thurston County. The monitors are made up of mostly residents from the surrounding area and Black Hills Audubon Society members. The group would love to have new members join the project.
The surveys are occurring in an area of high quality bird habitats including a 120 acre wet meadow currently being restored, the Deschutes River, Lake Lawrence and a 23 acre State designated waterfowl concentration wetland. Concerns that birds while in their diurnal and seasonal travels could collide with a 160’ cell phone tower being proposed next to these habitats is prompting this citizen science effort.
The citizen group prepared a study plan which then was peer-reviewed by the Washington State Dept. of Fish and Wildlife. The survey’s goal is to 1) identify priority bird species in the area and 2) determine local migratory flyways near the proposed tower site.
The citizen group of 20+ dedicated individuals so far has worked every Thursday in 2017 for a total of 250 hours and will continue working through April and very possibly extend through the summer months. Surveys are done for three hours after sunrise and three hours before dusk. Bald Eagles, American Kestrals, Virginia Rails, Red Tail Hawks, Great Blue Herons, Bufflehead, Merganser and Gadwall ducks are some of the birds often seen from the three monitoring posts.
New volunteers are welcome and can be trained by experienced birders while conducting the survey. The area is pristine and lovely with an unimpeded view of Mt. Rainier. Please join our community effort and you will have fond memories of a secret beauty in southeast Thurston County.

UPDATE:Deschutes Neighborhood Group Bird Survey for Sheep Farm
Greetings, Everyone!
Since the beginning of January we have been surveying the bird
population every Thursday close to the proposed tower site...3 hours after dawn
and 3 hours at dusk. Black Hills Audubon Members are participating and helping
our fledgling birders from our community...It is lots of fun and
rewarding!
As the weather changes and birds nest we expect even more
activity than ever!
Please see the BHAS Dinner Handout (attached) for the preliminary results of our surveys!
Help spread the word to the community at large about our Bird
Survey for preserving wildlife habitat and all of the wonderful species and bird
herds (flocks and gaggles) we have observed. Two pairs of Bald Eagles sat
peacefully in a tree for over an hour on the Smith Wetland Property last
Thursday.
If you would like to participate in our survey, please
contact us at this email (carolyn8chew@gmail.com) or Carolyn (360)
446-0468 and we will get back to you!
We welcome volunteers and you can train while
surveying! We even have beautiful color laminated booklets for identification
purposes.

To all of our donors, sponsors,
guests, and volunteers
Thank you for supporting the 17th Annual Auction for
Education!
With the support and generosity of
our local community and surrounding areas, the Annual Auction for Education has
grown into a very successful fundraiser for the Rainier Education Foundation and
the students of the Rainier School District.
Since REF’s inception, we have
raised over $800,000!
We would like to extend a heartfelt THANK YOU to the
businesses and individuals that have supported us in the past with donations. In
addition, without the time and energy provided by our many volunteers, both
adults and students, the REF would not be able to make scholarships and grants
available to support Rainier students. Thank you to the many volunteers for
their commitment!! New volunteers are always welcome.

VITA & Elderly Tax Assistance Programs
Tax assistance
The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance
(VITA) program offers free tax help to people who make $54,000 or less, persons
with disabilities and limited English speaking taxpayers who need assistance in
preparing their own tax returns. IRS-certified volunteers provide free basic
income tax return preparation with electronic filing to qualified
individuals.
In addition to VITA, the Tax Counseling
for the Elderly (TCE) program offers free tax help for all taxpayers,
particularly those who are 60 years of age and older, specializing in questions
about pensions and retirement-related issues unique to seniors. The
IRS-certified volunteers who provide tax counseling are often retired
individuals associated with non-profit organizations that receive grants from
the IRS.
To access these resources, you can use
the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Locator
tool on IRS.gov, or the AARP Tax-Aide Site Locator, which
allow users to input their zip code to find the closest
locations.
More information on resources provided
for free tax preparation can be found online on IRS.gov.More updates and information from me is
available on Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, or Medium, and subscribe to the email
newsletter.
Please stay in touch.
Sincerely,
Denny Heck
