Thank You for Grants for New Kitchen Vents

 Dear Seniors & Friends,

The Senior Center of Rainier received 2 grants that helped us replace the vent over one stove, which quit working, with 2 new commercial recessed vents.  We now have vents over both kitchen ranges.

A special "Thank You" to the Community Foundation of South Puget Sound and the Rotary Club of Olympia.  We couldn't have done this without the help of our grants and the contractor who installed our vents.

The Senior Center of Rainier is a non-profit charity.  We serve lunch on Mondays and Wednesdays.  Soup &/or Salad is served at 11:30 am and lunch at noon.  The cost is $7.00 for members & $9.00 for non-members.

The Senior Center of Rainier opened in 1976.  Moved to it's present location in 1977 and continues to operate with an all-volunteer staff (100%).  We do all of this with an annual income that is below $35,000, including the grants we receive.

The grants we receive help us get the equipment and make the improvements that keep our volunteers and members.  We couldn't do this without everyone's cooperation and support.

Thank you ALL!

Congratulations George Sharp!

George Johnson presented George Sharp with a Certificate of Appreciation at the monthly STEDI (South Thurston Economic Development Initiative) Meeting, Friday, November 19, 2021, for his help and inspiration here in Rainier, WA.  "We Love Rainier WA" is his creation.  He's helped us get it off the ground - and it hit the road running!

George Sharp has been the driving force behind many of the successful projects in Rainier WA.  He has supported & encouraged the Senior Center of Rainier, as well as the City of Rainier to write for grants to help fund major projects here.  I know that the Senior Center of Rainier and the Rainier Emergency Food Center received funds that helped us survive the pandemic lockdown.  We wouldn't have made it through these lockdowns without his guidance.  THANK YOU, GEORGE!

George identified resources for Rainier:

  • Senior Center of Rainier grants:  $17,500
  • Rainier Emergency Food center:  $12,500
  • City of Rainier:  $30,000 in 2020, $319,000 in 2021 & $319,000 2022
  • Thurston Strong Grants $860,000 Rural Areas & $90,000 Rainier Businesses

George brings people and groups together.  They build their own teams to get things done in South Puget Sound.  He's behind the economic development of many small communities in our area:  Bucoda, Rainier, Tenino, Rochester, Grand Mound & Yelm.

For your leadership, service and contributions to

“We Love Rainier WA”,

Senior Center of Rainier

and the people of the City of Rainier.

Your dedication and guidance has helped

make our community a huge success.

You are our “Difference Maker”.

2020 Updates & Roof Fundraising

 Dear Seniors and Friends,

This has been a difficult year for many people in our area.  With the schools being closed, this has been particularily hard for students and their parents, so We Love Rainier WA is hosting a "Lantern Walk" on New Year's Eve.  You can read more about it on their Facebook page: We Love Rainier WA .

We have a couple of fundraisers to help earn money for a new roof and gutters.

1. "Pepper Jelly" that's made by Cindy Amidon.  We have a few jars left at $7.00 each.

2.  Pie sale.  Pies range in price from $8.00 - $12.00

  •   15 - 8" Apple pies  $8.00
      7 - 8" Strawberry Rhubarb pies  $8.00
      8 - 9" Strawberry Rhubarb pies  $9.00
      3 - 8" Cherry pies  $8.00
      3 - 8" Peach pies  $8.00
      2 - 8" Guava pies $8.00
      1 - 9" Mixed Berry $9.00
      4 - 9" Apple Pie  $9.00

We have the following pies for $12.00

    1 - 9" Pumpkin Pie
    2 - 9" Pecan Pies
  • 5 - 9" Dutch Apple pies  $8.00

Due to grant funds we've received, we now have almost $15,000 in our building fund towards a new roof.  I have written and sent out donation request letters and another grant for our roof.  The cost of a new roof is in the mid $40,000 range.  The cost for gutters runs between $4,000 - $6,000.  We'really appreciate everyone's donation & support towards getting a new roof!

We just received a grant of $5,000 this week for a natural gas generator with an auto transfer switch.  We had Ron Gibson, from Rainier Public Works, research and recommend a generator for our center.  We now have 5 freezers, a commercial 2-door fridge and a side-by-side fridge.  In an emergency, we could loose all of our food, so an emergency generator is important to have in the event of a power outtage.
